Just after noon today, Clovis Police Department was called to the 500 block of Helm for a subject wanted for a felony warrant. When officers arrived the suspect was in a vehicle with a female. The female got out of the vehicle, the suspect intentionally backed the vehicle to try and strike the female. The suspect then accelerated at a high rate of speed directly towards the officers, refusing orders to stop. The two officers, who were in front of the vehicle, fired three rounds at the suspect. Officer’s rendered medical aid until American Ambulance personnel arrived who continued medical aide, and transferred to the suspect to the hospital. The Coroner confirmed he died at the hospital.
Due to the proximity of an elementary school that was open for summer session, the Clovis Unified Police put the school on lockdown for security measures. The school lifted the lockdown after the scene had been contained.
Helm Avenue will be closed from Bullard Avenue to Stuart Avenue for several more hours.
Clovis Police Department notified the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office and the responded to conduct and independent review.
